Design Once, Reuse Everywhere: A Scalable Approach to Notifications

Designing for Consistency, Clarity, and Configurability

Configuring web request notifications was manual, inconsistent, and prone to error. I led a holistic redesign to introduce reusable templates for all notification types including SMS, email, and text-based alerts, along with a centralized landing page and live preview feature for faster testing and validation. The new experience not only improved usability and integration workflows but also laid the foundation for a scalable notification system.

Users want to get alerted when important things happen without setting it up from scratch every time. A scalable template system reduced manual effort, and made it easier to configure alerts across the platform.

From Problem to Solution

The existing web request templates lacked essential functionality and users couldn’t securely manage requests or preview messages before deployment. My goal was to redesign the system to support flexible delivery methods (email, SMS, text), improve security and testing capabilities, and align with modern usability and scalability standards. I collaborated with engineering to define template structures, introduce live previews, and standardize interactions—resulting in a more reliable, scalable foundation for Geotab’s evolving notifications system.

Standardization can be powerful when it’s done with the user in mind. Designing for reuse isn’t just a technical solution, it’s a way to create clarity and reduce friction.
